I was sent a bag of Jiva Organics Ground Nutmeg (Powder) to review. The first thing I noticed when I opened the bag was the delicious intense aroma of fresh ground nutmeg. This nutmeg is all natural, with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. There is no salt, MSG, or GMO’s. It has not been treated with Ethylene Oxide (ETO) and it is NON-Irradiated. Although it is packaged in a facility that also handles tree nuts, peanuts, corn and soybean, so use caution if you have any of these sensitivities.

I was inspired to do a little pre-holiday baking by my new bag of nutmeg. I decided to make a batch of spiced walnuts. In a bowl I added a spoonful of unrefined coconut oil and a couple spoonfuls of organic maple syrup. Then I added some of my Jiva Organics nutmeg, some cinnamon, some powdered clove and a pinch of salt. I mixed all that up together and then I added  a few handfuls of roughly cut walnuts. I stirred in the walnuts until they were coated well with the syrup and seasonings. Then I spread the nuts out on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and baked them for one hour in a pre-heated 250º F oven.  Let the nuts cool completely and store in an air-tight container. These nuts are so tasty and make a great snack and the spice mixture makes them perfect for the holidays. Put them in a cute little jar and they make a perfect gift for your family or friends. I love to use them as a  topping for my baked sweet potato too.
